S. Joseph Avara was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were immigrants from Sicily. Avara has served OSIA in Baltimore at the local level as a member of the Lord Baltimore Lodge, later at the State level and then in the Maryland Grand Lodge as Vice President and State President.
